Introduction

[Three Rooftops]

Haramo Cuprum is a building that has retail and housing area. The 1st through 3rd floors have 7 stores, and the 4th through 9th floors accomodate 29 households. The site is located in Akishima City, a surburb of Tokyo. The building has 3 rooftops due to building regulation for the property. Each rooftop has a different usage. The rooftop on the 3rd floor is used as a public garden next to the cafe by area residents. The rooftop on the 6th floor is a private garden for residents. The top floor roof is for private use by the owner to watch fireworks.

The units of 8 type 29 households are highly overcrowded for the sake of profitability. However, the resident can use the rooftop as a wide living room. For the residents, the room is the ON space for living and the rooftop is the OFF space for resting and inviting their friends. The ON and OFF spaces are divided with a big copper wall. This building has succeeded in balancing profitability and livability by clearly distinguishing spatial closeness and sparsity.

[3つの屋上]

この建物は3つの屋上を持つ、集合住宅と店舗の複合ビルである。1階から3階までが店舗、4階から9階が29戸のワンルーム住居となっている。敷地は東京郊外の昭島市にある。３つの屋上は建築法規により、建物の軒高が３種類に分けられたことから生まれた。屋上はそれぞれ異なった用途を持つ。3階の屋上はカフェを持った公共の屋上で、ビルの住民や周辺住民が利用する空中庭園となる。6階の屋上は、そこに面した部屋の住人が独占するプライベートな庭となる。最上階の屋上は花火を見るためにビルオーナーが使用する。

8タイプ２９戸用意されたワンルームの住戸は収益をあげるため高過密となっているが、用意された屋上を利用することで、住人は広いリビングルームをシェアすることが出来る。住民にとって室内は生活のためのオンの空間、屋上は休憩や来客を招くためのオフの空間となる。オンとオフの空間は銅板で作られた大きな外壁によって区画されている。空間的な「密」と「疎」を明確に区別することで収益性と居住性を両立することに成功している。
