Introduction
[layer]
Layer City, planned for a ficticious site in the suburbs around Tokyo, is a science and research city where 30,000 people live. A terminal station, energy plants, and four kinds of university, Art and Humanities, Information science and Economy, Engineering, and Medical science and Biochemistry, are respectively arranged as belts of independent building groups. The road, the railway, the monorail, and the park are arranged to penetrate vertically through them.
The city’s arrangement is like geological strata. Layer City is planned not as a multistory city, piled up toward the sky, but as a flatly overlapping city.

Layer Cityは東京周辺の郊外にある架空の敷地に計画された30,000人が住む研究学術都市である。芸術・人文系、情報科学・経済系、工学系、医療科学・生物化学系の4種類の大学及びターミナル駅、エネルギープラントがそれぞれ独立した建物群の帯として、敷地に配置されている。それらを垂直に貫通するように、道路や鉄道、モノレールなどの交通機関と公園が配置されている。
まとまった目的を持った帯が並び、交わり合うことで、都市全体が地面を切り取ることで表れる、地層のような状態になって表れてくる。高層化され上に向かって積み上げられていく都市ではなく、フラットに重なり合う都市を計画した。

Description
[Section of Map]
I had to start this project only with one map that had been given first, because the site is fictitious. I started to read and to create more information from the map. I photocopied a lot of pieces of maps, piled them, hardened them with the resin, and cut and polished the section. The layer of the map that have been piled by hand appear in the section. In other words I might say the pattern of the layer is sectional information of the map. This is a concept of Layer City.
[01 Art + Humanities]
There are university facilities on the artificial ground that go 10m above than ground level. There are apartments in the sky 26m from the artificial ground and parking lots and roads under the artificial ground. These three areas are overlapped. Furthermore, this area that has the arena is a city center.
[02 Information Science + Economics]
The university facilities, the road, and the apartments are arranged in parallel.
[03 Engineering]
There are the university facilities dug 13m below ground. The apartment buildings of 73m in height are built there. The plaza for traffic is on the roof of the university facilities.
[04 Medical Science + Biochemistry]
There is a university in the buildings, built at both edge of this area. The bridges connecting them are apartments. The rord is on the ground level.
[地図の断面]
このプロジェクトは架空の敷地であるために、最初に与えられた地図以外はまったく情報がない状態から始めなければならなかった。まずは、その地図から情報を読み取り作り出すことから始まった。地図を何枚もコピーして積み重ね、それを樹脂で固め、切断し、断面を磨いた。その断面には人間の手によって積み重ねられることで出来た地図の層が姿を現した。この層の模様は言い換えれば、この地図の断面情報であると言える。この一連の操作がLayer Cityのコンセプトである。
[01 Art + Humanities]
芸術・人文系大学エリア。人工地盤により、GLより10m上がったところに大学施設がある。その地盤面より２６m上空に集合住宅があり、人工地盤の中には駐車場と道路がある。3つの役割を持った空間が重なり合って存在している。またアリーナを有し、この研究学術都市の中心となっている。
[02 Information Science + Economics]
情報・経済系大学エリア。大学施設、道路、集合住宅が同じレベルの地面に縦長に並んで配置されている。
[03 Engineering]
工学系大学エリア。地面から13mほど掘り下げたところに大学施設がある。そこに73mの高層の集合住宅が並び、大学の屋根の上が交通のための広場となっている。
[04 Medical Science + Biochemistry]
医学・生物化学系大学エリア。このエリアの両端に建つビルに大学施設が入り、それを繋ぐブリッジが集合住宅となっている。ＧＬ部分が道路となっている。
